Corrective IT maintenance is when an asset can be easily fixed or replaced. However, it can also result in unplanned and costly downtimes. Experts believe that 80% of your maintenance should be preventative, only 20% reactive.

5 Types of Corrective IT Maintenance

There are several types of corrective IT maintenance tasks firms can perform. Many engineering and IT firms use five kinds of corrective maintenance:

    1. Repair Failure – is the IT maintenance service which repairs a failing asset to make it work again.
    2. Overhauling – Completely restoring an asset to its original operating condition as defined by maintenance standards.
    3. Salvaging – IT services discard unfixable components and replace them with salvaged parts from non-repairable assets.
    4. Service – Final corrections after major remedial activities are called services.
    5. Rebuilding – This IT maintenance service is the disassembly and replacement of damaged components by original norms and requirements.

    Schedule vs Unscheduled Maintenance

The five IT maintenance services mentioned above can be scheduled or unscheduled depending on the need. Here is what it means for the maintenance service to be planned or unplanned.

    Scheduled or Planned

Run-to-failure IT maintenance and preventative maintenance are two types of planned maintenance. Run-to-failure refers to allowing an asset to run until it fails. Only non-critical or redundant systems that are easy to replace or repair are eligible for this corrective IT maintenance plan.

    Unscheduled or Unplanned

Unplanned IT maintenance services are when a breakdown happens suddenly. Most corrective IT maintenance falls under this category. The cause can be a lack of proper maintenance planning or an asset failing before its planned inspection or repair activity.
